Getting Started in 2010
Getting Started in 2010

Are you making a New Year's resolution this month? Whether it's to quit smoking, lose weight, or spend more time with your family, you'll have a much better chance of success if you set learning goals instead. A learning goal is simply a commitment to learn something rather than achieve a specific milestone. For example, a traditional goal might be to go work out at the gym three days a week, while a learning goal would be to hire a fitness trainer to teach you an appropriate workout program to get fit. People who set learning goals are much more likely to achieve them, they tend to stay motivated longer and get better results than those who set traditional goals.

Year of Tiger
Chinese New Year, The Year of the Tiger, February 14th, 2010

Harvest Thanksgiving Formalized During Han Dynasty: Chinese New Year celebrations have their origin with end-of-harvest celebrations when people would offer thanks to gods for good harvests and entreaty for a good crop in the following year. Although they varied according to the different calendars used, the customs were formalized under Han Dynasty (206BC-AD 25) rule.

Traditions Blossom Under Tang Dynasty
Varied festivals around god worship, sacrifice and celebration held at the end of the winter season and at the beginning of the spring were unified under the Han Dynasty rulers and consolidated, with their adoption of the formal Taichu calendar, to the first day of the first lunar month. During the economically prosperous and politically stable Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), celebrations around the New Year blossomed.

Traditional customs around superstitions and worship gradually became means for people simply to celebrate and enjoy time with their families.

Characteristics of persons born in the year of Tiger
Short-tempered, Suspicious, Adventurous, Sensitive, Emotional, Risk-taking.

Good Career Choices
Boss, Explorer, Race-car driver

Famous Tigers
Sun Yat Sen, Queen Elizabeth II, Emily Dickinson, Isadora Duncan, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Marilyn Monroe, Marco Polo, Beatrix Potter, Karl Marx, Ludwig van Beethoven.

What To Do Around Town
Toronto's Best Hot Chocolate

Toronto's Best Hot Chocolate

Erin Hipwell Oct 28, 2009 Like snow, scarves and holiday cookies, hot chocolate is a winter staple. It’s the perfect drink to warm up with after coming in from the cold, and is readily available at every coffee bar and corner cafe in the city. But, this raises an issue - - with such an abundance of choices, finding the best hot chocolate can be tough. As with lattes or cafe au lait, hot chocolate making is an art, and some places serve it up far better than others.

Click here to read on for a collection of hot chocolate hits within the city -- tried and tested so you can get the very best cocoa for your cash.

If it is too cold to go outside and you want to make your own version with a few simple ingredients, try this recipe:

2 tablespoons of sugar
4 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
one cup 1% milk, divided
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of ground cinnamon

Directions:

Mix sugar, cocoa and 2 tablespoons cold milk in a mug until smooth. Heat the remaining milk in a small saucepan on the stovetop or in a 2-cup glass measure in the microwave until steaming hot but not boiling. Stir in the cocoa mixture and vanilla.

To froth the hot chocolate, whirl a whisk in it by rubbing your hands back and forth. (Alternatively, pour the hot chocolate into a blender, cover with the lid and a kitchen towel and blend until frothy). Pour it back into the mug and sprinkle with cinnamon.

High Hopes for a New Entertainment District

While big box clubs got makeovers to keep their clientele coming, city councillor Adam Vaughan and the Entertainment District BIA were cooking up a campaign to end the club district. They unveiled the plan for the district earlier this year -- one that aims to push nightclubs out and reel in restaurants, retail stores and, of course, condominiums. High Hopes for a New Entertainment District
